Extensions 15 Day Tour: Cusco Inca Trail and Paso Horseback Riding

Introduction

For the more sportive traveler we made an extension with a lot of adventure in it.

We have combined the 4 day Inca trail with a 2 day horseback trek through the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Itinerary

Day 13

At 6 am we go by private bus to Kilometre 82 which is the start of the trail. The first day is relatively easy, walking 10 km, taking about 4 ½ hours. The nights camp is just at 3000 meters.

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Day 14

Today we'll ascend through dense vegetation to the first pass of the trail called the Warmiwañusca (or Dead Woman's) Pass at 4200m, taking about 5½ hours. It's another 1½ hours (easy walking) to our 2nd night's camp at Pacamayo (3600 m).

Day 15

Leaving camp at 7am we'll walk another 15 km (approx. 7 hours) to the ruins of Wiñaywayna (2600 m) You'll pass through a varied selection of Eco-systems along the way, ending up in overgrown lush rainforest. Wiñaywayna we'll set up camp.

Day 16

It's an early start, rising at 4.30am, breakfast for 5am and back on the trek to Machu Picchu. We'll try to arrive at Inti Punku (the sun gate) just prior to sunrise before 7 am. From the Sun Gate you'll get beautiful views of Machu Picchu in the distance. We should arrive at Machu Picchu ruins (2400m) at 7.30am and we'll commence a guided tour of the 'Lost City of the Incas'. In the after-noon we take the train to Ollantaytambo where we spent the night

Macu Picchu

Day 17

Today we go further by the famous Peruvian Paso horse. We start at about 9am. The road offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and river. We first stop to admire the ancient settlement of Pichingote, a tiny village of 6 families, who claim to be close descendants of the original Inca settlers. We pass through a small village en route, providing another great photo opportunity. After a short lunch break we head towards the major Inca temple/fortress of Ollantaytambo. We will have time to visit the ruins here, before settling into our camp for the night at a local Chakra (farm).

Day 18

After breakfast we set out for the amazing experimental Inca agricultural terraces at Moray. From Moray we follow a trail to Maras, where we enjoy our picnic lunch and chat with the locals. Then on to the salt pans of Salinas; a huge area, in a small valley, where the locals dry salt in hundreds of small ponds. After we have made our photographs we return to Ollantaytambo.
